Job Overview

RMYC is hiring Youth Crew Leaders (ages 21+ preferably) to lead conservation crews for teens aged 14-18 during the 2025 summer season. This position is perfect for students looking to build leadership, mentorship, and outdoor skills while making a meaningful impact in Colorado’s communities and landscapes.

Position Highlights:

Training:

  • You will be Saw Certified, receive a free Wilderness First Responder certification, and receive additional training in trail work, leadership, and experiential education.

Role:

  • Summer Season: Lead and mentor crews performing trail and conservation work around Northwest Colorado. Camping 24/7 with food, showers, and laundry all paid for!

  • Optional Fall Season: Science School. Teach 6th graders science with experiential education (testing water quality, carbon in trees, fire behaviors, etc) in a camp environment. (You will be trained in all of this over two weeks in August.) You will be housed in cabins during this time and receive a food stipend!

Duration:

  • Summer Season: May 5th or 12th- Aug 9th. 5 weeks of training and developing skills. 8 weeks with kids/working with project partners. One paid week off to explore Colorado.

  • Optional Fall Season: Aug 18th-Oct 10th. 2 weeks of training. 6 weeks of Science school. Three day weekends!

Benefits:

  •  $800 weekly stipend. Additional $40-60 monthly cell phone stipend. An AmeriCorps award of up to $3,697 to use on student loans or future schooling. All food/laundry/showers covered by us. Camping 24/7 so no need to worry about housing!

Networking Opportunities:

  • You will work with various conservation agencies throughout Colorado including: the Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, different city agencies, etc. This is a great opportunity to network with professionals!

We’re looking for candidates passionate about youth development, environmental stewardship, and the outdoors. This is a unique opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience in leadership, education, and conservation work.

Minimum Requirements

Qualifications:
● Must be 21 years old (Mandated by RMYC’s insurance policy for drivers)
● Past experience in environmental education, outdoor leadership or conservation and ability to facilitate lessons/group discussions is strongly preferred
● Leadership experience with youth age 11-18 (or a combination of professional and personal experience)
● Capacity to serve on diverse teams or with a diverse range of people
● Appropriate risk management skills and sound decision-making capabilities
● Demonstrates effectively balancing independent work/personal initiative with being a collaborative team
member
● Possesses strong organizational skills, is self-motivated, confident, flexible, and open-minded
● Can meet the physical demands of fieldwork
● Clean driving record (Driver’s License background check required)
● Must pass National Service Criminal History Checks (NSOPW, State, and FBI)
● U.S. Citizen, National, or Lawful Permanent Resident status required
● High school diploma or equivalent required to use Education Award after term of service
