Job Overview

Wilderness Kids Alexandria seeks a Program Coordinator to assist us in the critical areas of:

  • Outdoor education

  • Parent communication

  • Database management

  • Social media

Responsibilities:

As the Program Coordinator of a small non-profit, you’ll have the opportunity to work on a wide variety of tasks. Your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Co-Leading two to three After-School Programs per week.

  • Communicating via email, text, messaging apps, and telephone with parents of students. Note that many of our parents have limited English proficiency, with Spanish and Dari being the most common languages spoken, along with English.

  • Maintaining our student database with student enrollments, attendance records and more.

  • Generating reports from the database for other staff members and the Board of Directors.

  • Posting updates about our programming on Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn.

  • Other responsibilities may include: shopping for food, gear, and office supplies; preparing documentation for outings; inventorying gear and food; cleaning gear; making website updates; managing paper files; and other responsibilities as they arise.

  • This job’s normal hours are Monday to Friday; however, there may occasionally be times that we ask you to co-lead a Weekend Outing, Overnight Camping Trip, Skills Cohort, or Summer Program, which will entail non-standard hours and allow for compensatory time off.

  • You will report to the Program Director and work directly with the entire team – Program Director, Outdoor Adventure Manager, Executive Director, and part-time educators.

Qualifications:

  • A team player who works well with others on a small, productive team, both remotely and in-person.

  • An excellent communicator, able to talk with parents who come from a wide variety of cultural and linguistic backgrounds, students from a variety of backgrounds, fellow team members, partner organizations, volunteers, and others.

  • Experience as an outdoor educator with teenagers. Alternatively, experience as a youth worker who is confident in their ability to transfer those skills to a nature setting, with guidance from our staff. A classroom teacher, sports coach, or other youth worker, for example, may have just the right set of skills, even in the absence of outdoor education experience.

  • Experience with the Google suite of tools (gmail, docs, sheets, etc). A bonus would be familiarity with database management (for example Salesforce) and website editing (we use Wix).

  • (Strongly preferred) Experience (whether lived or through one’s professional life) with some of the challenges that our students may face. The vast majority of our students are among the BIPOC community and more than half are immigrants or the children of immigrants to the United States.

  • (Preferred) Proficiency in Spanish and/or Dari.

  • (Strongly preferred) A Driver’s License and 3 or more years driving experience, plus experience driving a 15 passenger-van or confidence that learning to do so is within your ability.

  • (Preferred) Demonstrated skill in one or more outdoor skills, such as climbing, paddling or biking; or a willingness to develop such skills.

Compensation:

$40,000 to $42,000 annually based on experience, with a 401K, generous PTO  and a QSEHRA health account.
