Chincoteague Bay Field Station is located on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. We provide hands on, feet wet education to anyone who wants to learn! With our focus on coastal and barrier island ecology, you can spend your summer working almost entirely in the field in a beautiful coastal environment! Job Overview

This is a full time seasonal positionMarine Science Camp Counselor is responsible for the supervision and safety of all campers for overnight camps at the Chincoteague Bay Field Station. Primary job duties include: directing and supervising summer campers day and night throughout their stay; planning/executing small and large group activities during free time and evenings; and fostering a fun and welcome environment for campers. Camp Counselors will also live, learn, and teach in the dynamic ecosystems of a barrier island; receive training in Environmental Interpretation and Education; and gain experience creating educational curricula for ages 8-18.

 

Start Date: Flexible, ASAP

End Date: August 5, 2022

Pay: $880 bi-weekly, room and board provided

 

Job Responsibilities

  • Ensure safety and wellbeing of campers at all times
  • Supervise campers during their free time, evenings, overnight, during meals, and between activities
  • Act as a role model for campers
  • Plan and execute the final camp of the summer (3-night camp for 10-12 year olds)
  • Plan and lead free time and evening activities for campers, including campfire, ice cream socials, tie dye, game night, and Citizen Science night
  • Assist with camper issues such as homesickness, disagreements, behavior, etc
  • Co-teach classes with field station educators
  • General program maintenance

Minimum Requirements

Requirements

  • 19 or older by start date
  • Have or be working towards a degree in education, outdoor recreation, environmental education, biology, marine science, oceanography, environmental science, or other related field
  • Must enjoy working with children of all ages
  • Valid driver's license
  • CPR and First Aid
