Purpose:
This initiative is an AmeriCorps Program designed to strengthen communities across the country by building leadership capacity, supporting nonprofit and public-sector partners, and investing in the next generation of service leaders. Based in the heart of Appalachia near the New River Gorge, the program serves communities facing challenges such as food insecurity, community resilience, education and workforce development, civic engagement, and legacy environmental impacts, and is guided by values of service, collaboration, and environmental stewardship.
As an AmeriCorps Position, the VISTA Leader mentors and supports AmeriCorps VISTA members, facilitates training and professional development, strengthens communication and coordination across project sites, and connects members to national networks and resources to ensure high-quality service experiences and sustainable, community-driven outcomes.
The AmeriCorps VISTA member will build capacity and develop sustainable solutions to alleviate poverty in underserved communities.
Description of Duties:
Stewards VISTA Leaders will mentor VISTA members in the field who are serving a VISTA year through Stewards Individual Placements.
The VISTA Leader will:
Stewards VISTA leaders gain experience in organizational development, peer mentoring, diplomacy, outreach and communication, networking, and leadership. Stewards VISTA Leaders must be self-motivated, utilizing knowledge and experience to support projects that connect economic opportunity and environmental stewardship. This position works with other VISTA leaders.

Evaluation and Reporting:
As an AmeriCorps VISTA member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed their required year of service; the member has satisfactorily completed assignments; and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.
Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets, accomplishment tracking, and quarterly reporting.
