Job Overview

Montana Conservation Corps is hiring a Piikuni Lands Field Coordinator! At MCC, we focus on the growth of our participants, positively impacting our climate and environment, and transferable job skills. The Piikuni Lands Crew gives participants the opportunity to work alongside others from the Blackfeet Nation who share a similar interest in making a lifelong impact on the community and nearby ancestral lands. Through this experience participants will have the opportunity to gain valuable job skills including trail maintenance, wildlife surveying, fencing, invasive species mitigation, and much more. In addition to technical skills, participants will gain cultural education and experience in team-work, communication, and leadership. Project partners include The Blackfeet Tribe,  Blackfeet Manpower, Tribal Historic Preservation Department, Glacier National Park, the USDA Forest Service, Montana Wild, Nature Conservancy, and Iinnii Initiative.

 

The Field Coordinator (FC) staff position is responsible for the regional coordination and logistical support of all Piikuni Lands Crew (PLC) field-based activities. Primary duties include direct support and mentoring of Crew Leaders and Crew Members, with emphasis on the development and delivery of technical skills training, technical and logistical coordination for crew projects, as well as shared monitoring and implementation of PLC’s leadership development program and administrative components. Additional activities will include teaching and modeling fundamental skills to participants, field visitation to help ensure the successful and safe completion of MCC projects, participation in On-Call incident response, and ensuring compliance with MCC policies and procedures. This position is supervised by the Blackfeet Partnerships Liaison, and is expected to maintain good communication between all MCC offices, project partners and crews. The Piikuni Lands FC will also work closely with the Blackfeet Partnerships Liaison and Blackfeet Manpower, especially with regards to recruiting, Hiring, disciplining and termination of Crew Members and Leaders. 

 

Location: Browning, MT

Position Dates: 04/17/2023 – 08/25/2023 

Wage: $20 p/hour (non-exempt, eligible for overtime pay)

Qualifications & Skills: 

  • Two-three years of college, work, or military experience, or some combination
  • Minimum age of 21
  • Previous leadership experience, skills, or training
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team, and able to balance responsibilities to competing priorities
  • Ability to be away on overnight trips for up to two weeks at a time, often camping in a tent
  • Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel, cloud-based collaborative systems, and G Suite for businesses
  • Ability to pass a Criminal History Check
  • A valid driver’s license, ability to pass a Motor Vehicle Records check and ability to be insurable per MCC parameters

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to hike 3-12 miles per day in terrain that can be steep, rocky or uneven, often wearing a 60lb backpack and carrying tools
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds repeatedly and use hand and power tools
  • Willingness to work long, hard hours in all weather conditions; ability to be away on overnight trips for up to 2-3 days at a time

Desired Requirements

  • Previous experience teaching, leading,  or training groups of young adults
  • Possess relevant technical skills including, but not limited to, trail maintenance and construction, crosscut and chainsaw use and maintenance, fencing, stream bank restoration, backcountry travel and other natural resource work. Applicant should also possess experience with a wide range of power and hand tools
  • Experience working with the Amskapi Piikuni community
