Job Overview

The Delaware Bayshore Education Outreach Coordinator designs and implements educational programming for community groups, decision makers, and schools in South Jersey. Programming focuses on fostering involvement in and support for our green stormwater infrastructure and water conservation initiatives such as rain gardens, riparian buffer tree plantings, pollinator meadows, and rain barrels. The position works with Society staff, local communities, schools, and other environmental groups and coalitions to ensure that the Society’s strategic goals and mission are met. This position creates and presents material in an inclusive and equitable manner to promote diversity and justice.

Key Responsibilities & Duties:

  • Produce content for social media, Society Blog, and SJ Watersavers Webpage that fosters community engagement and activism related to stormwater management, water quality improvement, and smart land use within the Delaware Bayshore region.
  • Develop and implement on-site and virtual educational programming around the Delaware Bayshore Conservation Department’s green stormwater infrastructure, water conservation, and water quality monitoring projects. Programming will highlight the importance of current and planned projects to the Kirkwood-Cohansey Aquifer as well as freshwater and Delaware Bay ecology, creatively providing positive hands-on interaction for students and connectivity to known environments.
  • Conduct logistical planning and coordination with teachers, bus drivers, and other points-of-contact to implement and perform in-class and on-site field presentations.
  • Partner with local schools and other community groups to assist the Society in finding new partners and volunteers for grant-funded projects that improve water quality and conservation.
  • Maintain relationships within the community to educate residents, youth, and community leaders to ensure proper maintenance of existing projects.
  • Support other Delaware Bayshore Program staff with project deliverables, grant milestones, and reports based on work completed. This includes physical labor in the creation of green stormwater infrastructure projects.
  • Assist Conservation Department staff with promoting and communicating project objectives to associated communities, schools, and members of the public.
  • Support Conservation Staff with coordinating and linking educational outreach with project volunteer tasks and events and actively engage the public at various project events.
  • Provide a Society presence at local community events where there’s an opportunity to engage the public about our projects.
  • Prepare and assemble outreach materials as needed and directed.
  • Occasionally work with other Society departments, including the Delaware Bayshore Restoration Department with their work on horseshoe crabs, oyster reefs, and salt marsh restoration.
  • Occasional evening and weekend work

Special Benefits

This is a salaried position at $38,000-$40,000 per year with competitive benefits and paid time off package.

Minimum Requirements

Desired Qualifications:

  • BS or relevant experience in marketing, education, and/or communications. Candidates should also have a background in an environmental field, including coastal ecology, wildlife biology, landscape architecture, and/or restoration ecology.
  • 1-2 years of experience in educational outreach and/or environmental ecology educational programs with understanding of ecological principles and how to convey to a variety of audiences.
  • Understanding of program objectives and the ability to integrate those objectives with school curriculum, in-class/field presentations, and volunteer events.
  • Proven ability to work with youth groups and groups of 30 or more.
  • Experience in coordinating volunteers and project related events.
  • Computer knowledge - familiarity with MS Office suite is required. Use of CADD and ArcView/Arclnfo GIS software a plus.
  • The work requires some manual labor; must be able to lift 35lbs, bend, twist, walk long distances, and enter streams/water bodies. Must also be comfortable working near various forms of wildlife.

Required Competencies:

  • Strong experience in logistical planning, scheduling, and project coordination across multiple disciplines.
