Job Overview

The Missouri River Bird Observatory (MRBO) seeks an Operations Assistant (OA) to help with all aspects of the organization’s operations. The OA will work directly with the Executive Director to ensure excellence in pursuit of MRBO’s conservation mission, which is to contribute to conservation of birds and their habitats via science, education, and advocacy. MRBO is based in the small village of Arrow Rock, Missouri, a National and State Historic Site. We have two facilities in Arrow Rock, and also conduct work all over Missouri and occasionally surrounding states.

The OA’s duties will include:

  • financial oversight – tracking revenue, expenses and budget in Quickbooks
  • donor tracking, relations, and engagement using the Little Greenlight database as well as traditional modes such as letter-writing
  • generation of newsletters for supporters and reports to funders
  • oversight of MRBO’s online store
  • assistance with oversight and staffing of MRBO’s visitor center in Arrow Rock, MO
  • social media engagement, website development/maintenance, and advertising
  • assistance with the coordination of public education events, both virtual and in-person
  • fundraising – including event management and grant-writing
  • generation of monthly e-newsletter and other email blasts
  • assistance with public outreach such as educational events and presentations
  • engaging in various opportunities for professional development, such as trainings, conferences, and networking events with other conservation organizations

We are seeking an individual with the following qualifications:

  • deep personal commitment to environmental conservation and social and environmental justice
  • interest in all aspects of nonprofit management
  • familiarity with Adobe InDesign or similar publishing program
  • some experience with, and interest in, financial tracking
  • great communication skills and enthusiasm for outreach
  • interest in the intersection of conservation science and public policy

Preferred (but not required) qualifications:

  • background in ecology, wildlife biology, or environmental education
  • grant-writing experience
  • donor relations experience

This is a full-time permanent position beginning 1 February 2022. There will be trial period of six months at which point the OA and MRBO staff will together determine the success of the relationship. This position could be remote until 1 April, at which time we will need the OA to be located in central Missouri. Very nice, shared lodging will be available 1 April if the OA requires time to locate suitable housing in the area; the possibility for housing to become a more permanent part of compensation may be negotiable. Salary is approximately $30K DOE, with $100/month stipend for health insurance.

Please apply by 15 January by sending a letter of interest, resume/CV, and three professional references to: [email protected]. Please include your desired salary range, exact dates of availability, and why you are interested in work at a conservation nonprofit. MRBO is a small but continually growing organization and this position has many opportunities for professional growth and career evolution. We are an equal opportunity employer that welcomes applications from individuals of diverse backgrounds.
