Job Overview

  • Does the outdoors call to you? Are you seeking a summer of meaningful work? Are you passionate about rock climbing and want to inspire kids to find that same love for you outdoor adventures? As a Climb Specialist (Rock Climbing Instructor) with our Expeditions Program  you will do exactly that by guiding kids on rock climbing adventures. You will also be asked to support multisport, mountain biking, and possibly backpacking trips. Our programs spend the week at a base camp located at campsites in state parks. This is a field position based in Orinda, California that runs Sundays through Fridays throughout the summer.

    In this role you will

    • Provide 24-hour support with guidance, supervision, safety and comfort for participants during all activities.
    • Co-lead groups of up to 13 campers in age and developmentally appropriate instruction with outdoor activities including rock climbing, Leave No Trace principles, and team building.
    • Set top ropes and releasable rappels without supervision; Gear management, inventory, and daily inspection
    • Depending on your camp location, you may also spend a couple days supporting mountain biking instruction along with program co-leaders (advanced mountain biking skills and knowledge not required)
    • You may be asked to also instruct paddling – training will be provided!
    • Serve as a role model and guide campers by exhibiting appropriate behavior, attitudes, and activities.
    • Follow and educate campers on safety protocols to ensure the safety and wellbeing of participants.
    • Provide exceptional customer service to parents and all participants in our programs.

    Job Requirements

    • Must be at least 21 years of age at the start of training.
    • Personal and/or professional climbing experience required; must have thorough knowledge of common climbing knots and climb technical skills
    • 1+ years of experience leading kids on multi-day camping or backpacking trips.
    • Passion for outdoor expeditions! Must be comfortable with multi-day camping excursions and the 24-hour supervision expectations of this position.
    • By the start of camp training, must have an active Wilderness First Responder (WFR, EMT, or W-EMT) and CPR certification.
    • Valid drivers’ license is required. All staff will go through a 2-day 15-passenger van driving training during your first week of employment

    Work Schedule

    • Sunday morning – Friday afternoon. Scheduled time off is Friday evening and all day Saturday.
    • Mandatory training begins May 18. Expeditions run through August 4.
