POSITION SUMMARY:
The Programs Director develops, organizes, and implements high-quality YMCA programs.  Ensures the camp experience is safe, fun, and enjoyable for members and program participants.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Division of Duties
  • 40% Development and Growth of Aquatic and Family programming at Camp Grom 
  • 30% Maintain a safe aquatics operation – including physical facilities with trained and ready staff
  • 15% Assisting with the leadership of summer day camp, special events, family camping, birthday parties, and outdoor education activities
  • 15% Management of Staff and Operations – Staff Recruitment, Hiring, Training, Certifications, Audits, In­ Services, Chemical Logs, etc.
Priorities
  • Supervision of all aquatic and adventure activity operations at Camp Grom
  • Responsible for the development, execution, and growth of aquatic/waterfront/and adventure activity programming
  • Accountable for budget expectations and outcomes of the aquatics department.
  • Assisting with the leadership and planning of special events, family camping days, birthday parties, outdoor education activities, and waterfront activities.
  • Responsible for providing complete aquatics maintenance and pool care.
  • Recruitment, training, and hiring of all aquatic and adventure activity staff
  • Supervision and development of program staff during summer day camp
  • Assists in planning and maintaining quality programming and activities during summer day camp 
The Programs Director must understand and be willing to learn the necessary skills required for the successful completion of duties including:
1. Budget and Financial Performance
a. Responsible for developing and managing the aquatics budget to meet fiscal objectives.
b. Makes necessary purchases, inventories and deliveries of all program-related supplies in accordance with Association standards
2. Program Development and Membership Development
a. Directs and supervises all aquatic program activities to meet the needs of the community and fulfill YMCA objectives. Establishes new program activities and expands programs within the community in accordance with strategic and operating plans.
b. Creates and schedules swim classes, rentals, water exercise, and family events in the pool.
c. Models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions. Responds to all member and community inquiries and complaints in a timely manner.
d. Compiles program statistics. Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of and participation in the Aquatic program.
3. Team Performance Towards Organizational Goals
a. Recruits, hires, trains, schedules and supervises all aquatic personnel and volunteers.  Reviews and evaluates staff performance. Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals. Ensures records of staff certifications are current and complete at all times.
b. Conducts lifeguarding, swim instruction, oxygen administration, swim instructor First Aid and CPR training.
c. Assists with Program Committee and Cabinet meetings as necessary. 
d. Ensures all aquatics staff is trained in emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.  Follows expectations of regular in-service training for staff and completes all related reports for record-keeping.  
4. Fundraising
a. Actively participates in YMCA fundraising activities and special events.
5. Professional Development
a. Completes employee training as required, including NSO, Bloodborne Pathogens and Child Abuse Prevention .
b. Adheres to all YMCA of South Hampton Roads policies, procedures, rules, COVID-19 health and safety precautions, regulations and best practices as outlined by the Association.
c. Is able to perform all functions as those they supervise and meets qualifications and certifications of Lifeguard III and Swim Instructor.
d. Assists in all areas as assigned.
6. Facility Management
a. Conducts and ensures proper maintenance of indoor pools (1). Maintains accurate records of pool chemical levels and facility maintenance in adherence with state, local, and YMCA health and safety regulations. 
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Minimum age of 21.
  2. Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid certification.
  3. Current YMCA Lifeguarding or Red Cross Lifeguarding certifications (instructor level preferred). Must have YMCA Lifeguard Instructor Certification within 180 days of hire.
  4. Current Swim Instructor Certification preferred, or obtained within 90 days of hire.
  5. Current AFO certification preferred, or obtained within 60 days of hire.
  6. Preferred candidates will have a minimum experience of 3-5 years in the aquatics field.
  7. College degree in a relevant field is preferred.
  8. Will be required to have trainer certifications in CPR, AED, 02, Swim Instructor and Lifeguarding within 1 year of employment.
  9. Ability to maintain all required certifications and the necessary level of physical and mental readiness.
  10. Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
  11. Supervisory experience required; 3-5 years preferred.
  12. Preferred candidates will have experience in either childcare or day/ overnight camps

WORKING CONDITIONS:
  1. Requires a person of maturity and good judgment, who can operate with a minimum of guidance from the Executive Director.
  2. Requires ability to exercise appropriate independent judgment, to assess facts and issues, and make non-routine decisions regarding day-to-day operational problems and issues.
  3. Requires effective team-building and team-leadership skills.
  4. Must maintain cooperative, functional relationships with senior leadership team, peers, and subordinates.
  5. Must maintain a positive, energetic attitude toward YMCA work, goals, and values.
  6. Must have ability to respond to emergencies 24 hours a day, and to travel as needed for operational management, including on-site presence in managing major operational problems.
  7. Must have superior oral and written communication skills and the ability to respond to a wide variety of constituencies, including staff, volunteers, members, program participants, vendors, community leaders, etc.
  8. Perform the duties of direct reports as needed.
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS, PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions of position and to supervise program activities.
  2. Ability to pass lifeguard water test.
  3. Must be able to remain alert.
  4. Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods.
  5. Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals.
  6. Ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision.
  7. Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue.
  8. Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and 
  9. loud situations.
  10. Ability to work inside and outside (environments include humidity, heat, cold, and inclement weather conditions).
  11. Must be able to lift and pull 75 pounds.
ACCOUNTABILITY:
Accountable for completion of assigned goals as measured by the number of people served, cause-driven measures, service satisfaction scores, operating results, and supervisor evaluation of assigned duties.
