Girl Scouts San Diego is seeking seasonal staff to fulfill the roles of Challenge Course Support Facilitator and Challenge Course Lead Facilitator to support weekend programming.

Challenge Course Support Facilitators

The Challenge Course Support Facilitator will assist in Challenge Course activities for each group attending the Challenge Course, both high and low elements. The facilitator will support an experience for each group based on needs assessment, progression and group goals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • In conjunction with Challenge Course Lead Facilitators, facilitates groups through team building games, initiatives, low elements, belayed elements, and zip receiving.
  • In conjunction with Challenge Course Lead Facilitator, supervises all activities connected with the Challenge Course to ensure safety of participants, including but not limited to, executing safe and effective programming, using good judgment when making independent decisions and instructing clients in the proper use of all course elements and equipment.
  • Participates in set-up, take down, and equipment check for each group. Reports any equipment or course concerns to Outdoor Adventure Specialist. Properly stores equipment after each use.
  • Develops appropriate combination of elements to achieve the groups’ goals. Tailors the challenge course experience to the objectives and capabilities of the client.
  • Cultivates learning among participants and groups, including technical skills as well as the experiential aspects of the course. Facilitates participants processing experiences in order to integrate what has been learned.
  • Completes needs assessments, inspections, and post-course reports in a timely manner.
  • Works as team with other facilitators and Outdoor Adventure Specialist in planning, facilitating, operating, and evaluating the course.
  • Contributes to the diversity emphasis of the council by ensuring that all materials, activities and programs are sensitive to and reflective of the interest, values and needs of persons of all racial/ethnic groups, cultures, religions and abilities.
  • Performs physical tasks of position, including but not limited to tying specific knots, belaying clients, moving from element to element, setting up and taking down climbing ropes, and climbing structures as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Challenge Course Lead Facilitator

The Challenge Course Lead Facilitator will manage all aspects of Challenge Course activities for each group attending the Challenge Course, both high and low elements, or Adventure Zone. The facilitator will create and facilitate an experience for each group based on needs assessment, progression and group goals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Leads team of facilitators in challenge course activities when outdoor program manager and outdoor adventure specialist is not present.
  • Facilitates group goals through team building games, initiatives, low elements and high elements.
  • Supervises all activities connected with the Challenge Course to ensure safety of participants, including but not limited to, executing safe and effective programming, using good judgment when making independent decisions and instructing clients in the proper use of all course elements and equipment.

Minimum Requirements

  • High School graduate or equivalent. Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Level I certified though an official ACCT vendor or Girl Scout site specific Level I training.
  • Attain and maintain First Aid/CPR/AED certification from an approved provider.
  • Effective oral, written, and communication skills to interact with all age levels.
  • Able to work productively and respectfully with diverse populations, cultures, abilities, ages and backgrounds.
  • Problem solving, decision-making skills and organizational skills.
  • Able to manage large groups of participants. Knowledge of group dynamics, progression and debriefing techniques.
  • Knowledge and understanding of challenge by choice.
  • Enthusiasm, interest and commitment to experiential education.
  • Experience organizing and/or working with adult volunteers and Girl Scout troop leaders.
  • Basic understanding of Girl Scout Leadership Experience and how it pertains to Challenge Course activities.
  • Understands emergency procedures and must be comfortable responding to emergency situations in a professional and calm demeanor.
  • Willingness to accept the beliefs and principles of the Girl Scout Movement and the acceptance of the relevant and compelling benefits of Girl Scouting.
