Youth Clubs Temporary Field Coordinator

The Mountaineers was formed in 1906 to explore the wild areas and peaks in the Pacific Northwest and beyond. With 15,000 members and branches from Olympia to Bellingham, The Mountaineers enjoys an outstanding reputation in its field and in the community. Our dedicated staff, members, and volunteers are deeply committed to successfully accomplishing our mission. Each year 1,600 volunteers deliver outdoor skill courses to 2,500 students and lead  2,000+ recreational trips and courses. In addition, we advocate for access and protection of recreational lands. Last year we helped protect 30,000 acres of public land in Washington State. The organization has also published 500 outdoor recreation and conservation advocacy books. Our mission is to enrich the lives of people by helping them explore, conserve, learn about, and enjoy the wild lands and waters of the Pacific Northwest and beyond. Job Overview

Position Overview:

The Field Coordinator is responsible for providing high-quality, outdoor education experiences to youth & their families. This position will oversee our Pathfinders (age 6-7), Nomads (ages 8-9), and Explorers (age 10-11) clubs directly; and share oversight of Junior MAC (ages 12-13) with the Assoc. Program Manager; and have occasional opportunities throughout the year with the Mountaineers Adventure Club (ages 14-18). This is a full time position paying $17-$19 an hour dependent on experience. The expected work schedule is 40 hours per week including evening and weekend hours.

What you will do: 

Work closely with the Associate Youth Program Manager to plan and execute clubs programming

  • Attend weekday evening meetings (up to 5-6 times monthly) and clubs outdoor trips, which occur primarily on weekends
  • Execute a prescribed annual progression of skills for new and returning members, including parents
  • Empower and support parents to plan and lead trips they are qualified to lead

Planning & Preparation

  • Ensure supplies are ordered as needed
  • Reserve Mountaineers vehicle as necessary
  • Support Assoc. Program Manager with long-term program scheduling and curriculum
  • Ensure rooms/space is booked for meetings and training events
  • Ensure that trip plans and trip planning documents are prepared; either support parents in the creation of these documents or do them yourself
  • Ensure group gear is ready for trips and that it gets returned
  • Provide access to individual gear checkout for families; support Gear Library coordinator where necessary

Communication and Logistics

  • Serve as a first point of contact for all parent and youth communications for Pathfinders, Nomads, and Explorers
  • Collaborate with Assoc. Program Manager on communications for Junior MAC
  • Communicate frequently and clearly to members and parents
  • Collect and file all member paperwork
  • Ensure all trip and activity data is recorded and accurate

Who you are: 

  • Knowledge, desire to, and experience working with a variety of populations, including elementary through middle school aged youth of varied abilities, diverse ethnicities and diverse socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Outdoor Education experience, especially in experiential education.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including 2-4 weekends/month.
  • Opportunity to safely lead sport climbs at a 5.6/5.7 level, building climbing anchors, and rappelling skills. On the job training available if other qualifications are met.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Positive attitude and ability to carry oneself in a professional manner to create positive experiences clubs families and volunteers
  • Self-motivated with ability to carry out projects independently and work within a team.
  • Familiarity with Google suite and Microsoft office software.
  • Understanding of the organizational structure and programs of The Mountaineers.
  • Current First Aid & CPR certification or willingness to obtain.

You must be able to pass a criminal background check to work within this position. Occasionally you will be required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. While you are performing the duties of this job, you may be required to stand for extended periods of time while leading youth, and must be able to hike on uneven and hilly terrain continuously for up to five miles. As a requirement of instructing youth programs you will be required to bend, squat, run, or climb.
