Job Overview

Position Description: Are you an educator or guide looking for work during the spring shoulder season?  Come join Teton Science Schools for a 5-week adventure as a field instructor!  Instructors provide customized place-based field education programming for youth aged 11-18 years old in residential programs. Participants and students develop curiosity, critical thinking skills, social-emotional learning, and science literacy through exploratory, outdoor adventures.  Instructors often plan, co-teach, and debrief their education experiences with their peers and/or AmeriCorps service members.  While programming will be based out of the Jackson Campus of Teton Science Schools, our classrooms are the trails, forests, and streams of Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks and the Bridger-Teton National Forest.  This position will last for 5-weeks; 1-week of training followed by 4-weeks of field instruction.

Responsibilities:

Develop and implement thematic, place-based, hands-on field science curriculum and evening programs for multi-day, outdoor learning experiences.

Ability to adhere to and operate within TSS risk management procedures while managing student physical, social, and emotional risk in the field.

Facilitate the engaging programming while leading field groups of 7-13 people on hiking excursions in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.

Stretches of time outdoors in all weather, including extreme temperatures and arid conditions.

Attend staff training and meetings.

Assist with cleaning and maintaining residential lodges, teaching spaces, dining lodge, equipment, and supplies.

Support all aspects of programming within Field Education.

Daily rate starts at  $125/day. Additional pay for evening work and other auxiliary duties.

Minimum Requirements

Qualifications:

Experience teaching and/or guiding groups in the outdoors through a combination of course work and/or professional settings.

Experience managing risk, traveling, and teaching in the outdoors in variable weather conditions.

Bachelor’s degree in science, education, or related field; or relevant equivalent experience.

Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching.

Able to drive 15 passenger vans and minibuses for extended periods.

Able to carry a backpack of 20+ lbs for 8 hours a day over uneven terrain.

Ability to work non-traditional schedules and weeks, 3-day to 7-day programs, some evenings and weekends, with mid-week days off.

Valid Wilderness First Responder certification preferred.  Wilderness First Aid certification may be accepted with certain exceptions.

Valid Driver's License, minimum of 21 years of age.

Successful applicants must pass a criminal history background check and driving record review prior to start date.
