Ideally suited for people with a good science background who already have worked in outdoor education. LACOSS is currently hiring full-time naturalists for next school year. We are a residential outdoor education program serving Southern California students, and specializing in hands-on learning of ecosystem science concepts. The Outdoor Science School operates at two gorgeous locations in the mountains north of Los Angeles, California.

DUTIES:  Teach science to 5th and 6th grade students, using phenomena-based, hands-on teaching techniques in the outdoors. The curriculum includes NGSS science concepts such as, ecosystems, basic astronomy, geology & soils, human ecology, science practices, etc. Naturalists will also lead evening programs, provide occasional student supervision, and train and supervise volunteer cabin leaders. Other duties common to residential outdoor education programs are assigned as needed. All duties are scheduled within a 40-hour work week.

QUALIFICATIONS: BA/BS in life science, natural resources (interpretation or education), environmental science, relevant physical science (geology, astronomy, etc.) or other comparable fields. Course work should include several life and earth science courses, and some field experience. Previous outdoor teaching experience required. First Aid/CPR certification. Must be physically able to lead teaching hikes in a semi-wilderness setting. Able to deal patiently and constructively with children and teens. Good personal and group communication skills. Ability to sing and/or play a musical instrument is desired, but not required. Willing to work irregular hours.

EMPLOYMENT PERIOD: Mid-October through mid-May with some flexibility. Please inquire for details.

COMPENSATION: Starting compensation of $769 per week, increasing to $966/week in subsequent years. Housing included. Medical, dental, vision benefits
