Title: Executive Director

Outward Bound California seeks a strategic, inspirational Executive Director to deepen the impact of this remarkable organization and lead through a lens of equity, inclusion, and business acumen to achieve its core mission of changing lives through challenge and discovery. 

As part of an international network of 37 schools worldwide, 10 in the United States, Outward Bound California (OBCA) is a nonprofit educational organization with a core mission of changing lives through challenge and discovery. Its programs develop character, build leadership, and support self-discovery in remote wilderness settings and urban green spaces.

The Executive Director (ED) provides visionary leadership and savvy management of the organization as its heart, face, and voice. The ED strives everyday to live, share, and sustain OBCA’s values and potential to create a positive, engaging place to work, learn, and lead. The ED is responsible for delivering on the mission, program, safety, financial, and strategic goals of the organization in a fiscally, ethically, and legally sound manner. The ED plays a leading role, partnering closely with the Board and senior staff, to develop and articulate OBCA’s strategic direction and implement the resulting strategies and initiatives utilizing sound business skill and judgment. The ED is the chief steward of the Outward Bound educational model for the benefit of all and oversees the continued growth of this dynamic organization as it executes its strategic plan and vision for impact. 

The ideal candidate is an inspirational leader and communicator with innate emotional intelligence, high levels of business and fundraising acumen, and a collaborative, decisive approach. OBCA seeks an ED with a minimum of 10 years of experience in education, nonprofit organizations, or other business requiring executive skills and effective leadership, including a minimum of five years in a managerial position with P&L responsibility. 

Location

The Executive Director will work remotely, ideally within 3–4-hours transit of an OBCA program site or the Bay Area. Regular travel will be required, especially during program seasons. Irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and on-call times are expected.

Compensation

A competitive compensation package, including comprehensive benefits, will be offered commensurate with experience. OBCA encourages applications from individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences. The expected salary range for this position is $150,000—$170,000.
