Job Overview

Join the team at McDowell Environmental Center, located in northwest Alabama. We are a residential environmental center offering one, two, and three-day trips for schools across the Southeast. We are currently hiring environmental education instructors for our fall season, which runs from mid-August to mid-December. If you have a passion for the outdoors and want to share that passion, please apply! Candidates 21 or older. Interested applicants, please email Beth Dille at [email protected](link sends e-mail) to apply or to learn more.

Share our 1,140 acres of forests, streams, waterfalls, and canyons in northwest Alabama with groups of students from all over the Southeast. Work with the students to foster a sense of community as well as an appreciation, understanding, and responsibility for the environment. The students, mostly in grades 3 – 8, come from a variety of backgrounds and visit our Center for one, two, or three-day programs.

Teach engaging, hands-on classes in the great outdoors, i.e., forest ecology, map & compass skills, geology, aquatic ecology, Native American history, canoeing, team building, and high ropes. Adapt the established lesson plans to match your teaching style and strengths. Assist with program development. Have a chance to handle and teach with our educational raptors and reptiles.

The fall season starts mid-August and goes through mid-December.

To apply, email Beth Dille at [email protected] a resume, cover letter, and three professional references.

Special Benefits

Compensation includes pay starting at $290/week, meals, private rooms (all furniture provided) with shared kitchen, laundry, and screened-in porch (with rocking chairs!), WiFi access, and an intensive two-week staff training.

Minimum Requirements

In order to succeed in this position, you must have a demonstrated respect and affinity for children and a desire to help them learn and grow in an outdoor environment. The following characteristics are essential: enthusiasm, maturity, initiative, sense of humor, flexibility, and team spirit. Instructors need to be familiar with the outdoors and environmental issues and have a passion to share this with our guests. All employees will undergo a background check once hired. Must be 21 or older to apply.
