Day Camp Coordinator

The Mountaineers was formed in 1906 to explore the wild areas and peaks in the Pacific Northwest and beyond. With 15,000 members and branches from Olympia to Bellingham, The Mountaineers enjoys an outstanding reputation in its field and in the community. Our dedicated staff, members, and volunteers are deeply committed to successfully accomplishing our mission. Each year 1,600 volunteers deliver outdoor skill courses to 2,500 students and lead  2,000+ recreational trips and courses. In addition, we advocate for access and protection of recreational lands. Last year we helped protect 30,000 acres of public land in Washington State. The organization has also published 500 outdoor recreation and conservation advocacy books. Our mission is to enrich the lives of people by helping them explore, conserve, learn about, and enjoy the wild lands and waters of the Pacific Northwest and beyond. Job Overview

Position Overview

The Summer Camp Program Coordinator is the inspirational staff leader, organizational mastermind, and purveyor of all things camp. They are primarily responsible for the safe and effective execution of educational and recreational programming for Mountaineers day camps. They will work collaboratively other camp staff to create an inclusive and welcoming camp environment. This includes being a leader to all camp staff and volunteers, enthusiastically facilitating large group programs and field trips, taking initiative to go above and beyond, and assisting the Camp Director in numerous aspects of camp.

Key Responsibilities 

  • Oversee, organize, and support programmatic elements of camp such as group programs, field trip days, waterfront activity, climbing instruction, Thursday overnights and extended care.
  • Create a positive, enthusiastic, supportive, professional environment for staff, volunteers, and campers.
  • Train staff and volunteers in program delivery and curriculum.
  • Ensure The Mountaineers youth policies and procedures are followed and adhered to at all times.
  • Act as a mentor and point of contact person for staff, CITs, and volunteers.
  • Act as the “face of camp” at all times, including:
  • Facilitating check in and check out
  • Running all-camp activities daily
  • Running Family Friday
  • Providing a leadership presence throughout the camp day
  • Providing excellent customer service to camp families
  • Maintain daily schedule and check in with camp groups.
  • Provide outdoor instruction for campers (i.e. climbing, kayaking, hiking, swimming, etc.)
  • Safely manage top rope sites on campus and during field trips.
  • Assist Camp Director in developing all-camp programs, activities, and educational curriculum.
  • Ensure all supplies are ordered and ready for use each day.
  • Run extended care with volunteer staff either before camp (7:45-9:00am) or afterwards (4-5:30pm).
  • Run Thursday overnight program with volunteer staff at least three times over the summer.
  • Stand in as Camp Director when Camp Director is absent.

Requirements

  • Minimum age 21.
  • Have a high school diploma.
  • A positive, enthusiastic team player and leader.
  • Experience working outdoors with youth.
  • Current CPR & First Aid Certification or ability to obtain certification before start date
  • Must attend all of staff training and be available starting June 7 for prep work

Desired Qualifications

  • Climbing and belaying skills and experience managing top rope sites preferred.
  • Experience with curriculum development.
  • 2+ years of past summer camp experience preferred.
  • Experience managing a team in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Experience teaching outdoor recreation skills such as first aid, navigation, naturalist skills, kayaking, climbing, etc.

Work Environment 

This role is based in Seattle, WA at The Mountaineers Program Center in Magnuson Park. Summer Camp 2022 will run in person with COVID-19 protocols in place to ensure the safety of campers and staff. As Washington State’s reopening guidelines continue to evolve and shift, so too do camp protocols. Staff will be updated as these adaptations are made and are encouraged to communicate their questions, concerns, and needs to the Camp Director throughout the planning process.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to lift/move 20 pounds regularly and up to 40 pounds occasionally on program days.
  • Ability to walk for 4 or more hours continuously
  • Ability to care for self and others in a snowy environment.
