Job Overview

Position Overview

The Associate Outreach Programs Manager is responsible for providing high-quality, meaningful outdoor education experiences to partner groups. This position will manage and facilitate the Mountain Workshop program and Gear Library, as well as any related outreach and training programs. This position strives to increase access to outdoor experiences for youth most impacted by educational and/or environmental injustice.

Success measures will include growth in outreach program capacity and variety, participant and partner organization satisfaction, volunteer satisfaction, growth and maintenance of Gear Library assets, and growth in annual equipment rentals.

Key Responsibilities

Program Management (60%)

  • Work closely with the Associate Director of Leadership & Operations to develop vision, design, and budget for Mountain Workshop and Gear Library programs
  • Recruit, develop, and manage program partnerships for participation in Mountain Workshops and Gear Library programs
  • Contract with outside vendors and/or transportation vendors as needed
  • Manage the daily operations of the Gear Library and associated trainings and programs
  • Develop and maintain systems for gear inventory, acquisition, and maintenance
  • Serve as primary liaison with the Outdoors Empowered Network
  • Recruit, train, schedule, and supervise volunteers and staff in program delivery
  • Develop and implement a recognition and reward program for outreach volunteers
  • Market programs within and outside of The Mountaineers community
  • Develop age-appropriate curricula for outreach programs that includes focus on recreation and conservation
  • Develop and implement program evaluations to ensure outreach programs are meeting The Mountaineers mission and community needs
  • Update and maintain outward facing website and internal database
  • Support grant writing and reporting
  • Ensure appropriate paperwork is completed and filed for groups, volunteers, youth, parents, Gear Library cardholders, and vendors
  • Ensure programming is within the models and guidelines for Mountaineers Youth Programs
  • Facilitate annual Snowshoe summit meetings

Program Delivery (40%)

  • Instruct for Mountain Workshop programs, which will include occasional evenings and weekends
  • Deliver Gear Library rentals and lead ongoing trainings

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in outdoor education
  • Experience working with youth, including those furthest from justice, and/or customer service experience
  • Experience training and supervising others
  • Experience working directly with volunteers
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills
  • Excellent written communication 
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at once and prioritize tasks as needed
  • Proficient in basic climbing skills and a variety of outdoor pursuits, including:
    • Ability to sport lead climb to 5.7
    • Ability to build and clean climbing anchors
    • Ability to rappel
  • Current First Aid & CPR certification preferred
  • Cultural competency and desire to work with people of all races, ages, genders, abilities and economic backgrounds.
  • Ability to pass a national criminal background and sex offender check.

Work Environment 

This role is based in Seattle, WA at The Mountaineers program center in Magnuson Park. Due to the pandemic, this position is currently about 50% remote (work from home) and we anticipate it will remain partially remote until Fall 2021. The Mountaineers will provide a laptop computer for remote access. 

Physical Demands

  • Ability to work and manage a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends as needed. Frequent evening and weekend work is expected.
  • Ability to travel to offsite programs. Must have a valid driver’s license and/or reliable transportation.
  • Ability to lift/move 20 pounds regularly and up to 50 pounds occasionally on program days.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time and hike on uneven and hilly terrain continuously for up to ten miles. Occasionally required to bend, squat, run, or climb as part of duties leading youth.

Benefits

This position is for a full-time, exempt employee. Salary range is $42,000-$48,000 per year, depending on experience. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, life, and long-term disability insurance, and paid sick, vacation, and holiday time. 401(k) retirement plan available after three months.
