Appalachian Conservation Corps:
Our Individual Placement program works to connect young people to conservation service work across Appalachia and neighboring communities in Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, DC, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. ACC is a program of Conservation Legacy, a nationwide network of conservation organizations.
Individual Placements gain hands-on experience at their placement site, and ACC supports them through their term, as well as provides a variety of benefits to help them succeed in achieving their career goals. ACC welcomes national applicants, but also emphasizes the engagement of local individuals who represent the communities in which they serve.
Position Summary:
This is a great opportunity to learn more about a career in resource management and land stewardship! The Resource Management and Maintenance Individual Placement is an internship position based at Monocacy National Battlefield in Frederick, Maryland.
The Resource Management and Maintenance Individual Placement at Monocacy National Battlefield will work directly with both Natural & Cultural Resources Management and the Maintenance Division to complete a wide variety of field projects in Summer 2024.
The 12-week intern position will work as a team member to complete various projects including trail maintenance and repair; fence repair and construction; exotic plant management; landscaping; native species plantings; grass mowing and trimming; painting; and other summer projects. Interns will work with various tools and equipment including hand tools, trimmers, backpack and tank herbicide sprayers, and power tools.
Individuals will also have the opportunity to work extensively with NPS staff biological science technicians, facilities’ staff, carpenters, archeologist, Youth Conservation Corps enrollees, other interns, and the park’s Chief of Resource Management and Chief of Maintenance. There will also be opportunities to learn about the various roles within the NPS, including law enforcement and resource education and interpretation.
Training may be provided in chainsaw operation and safety, First Aid/CPR/AED, archaeological field methods, pesticide use and safety, Operational Leadership (safety), wildland firefighting, plant identification, landscaping and pruning, and others as needed.
Housing is NOT provided for this position.

General Qualifications:
To qualify, you must be between the ages of 18 and 30, and a US citizen that has received a high school diploma or GED. All offers of employment are conditional upon completion of an acceptable check of the National Sex Offender Public Registry and federal criminal background check. Must be eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award.
