Job Overview

The Youth Programs Manager (YPM) staff position is based out of a Montana Conservation Corps (MCC) Youth Program office and is responsible for the management and development of programs serving primarily high school youth.  Primary duties include hiring, training and supervision of AmeriCorps members to serve as youth program leaders, as well as the supervision of Youth Program Coordinators and Senior Expedition Leaders.  Additional duties include youth participant recruitment and enrollment, coordination of community service events, field logistics management and all aspects of youth program implementation. Activities will include programming. The Youth Program Manager works collaboratively with the youth program team and must develop and maintain a good working relationship with Youth Crew Leaders and participants, parents/guardians, project partners, community partners, and other program and statewide staff.


Classification: Regular Full-Time

Status: Exempt

Bi-Weekly Salary: $1,840, health Insurance, 401K after one year, Travel/Food reimbursement

Location: Kalispell or Bozeman, MT (Kalispell preferred)

Position Dates: 1/9/2023-10/13/2023

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Program Management:

  • Responsible for the hiring, training, supervision and evaluation of MCC Youth Program Leaders
  • Engage with schools and youth-serving organizations in program and partnership development for out-of-school time programming
  • Primary risk manager for youth programs
  • Work collaboratively with the State Office and other program staff in the development and implementation of the Youth Program curriculum and program evaluation activities
  • Ensure high quality of MCC programming; thorough knowledge of MCC Youth program objectives as well as education and training curriculum
  • Demonstrate an ability to work across differences to promote inclusion of all staff, participants and partners
  • Instill a culture of inclusion, caring and professionalism, cultivate safety awareness within crews; ensure compliance with MCC policies and safety standards within all crews
  • Provide leadership and coordinate appropriate levels of counseling support to youth program coordinators, crew leaders and individual participants

Administrative Support:

  • Ensure timely and thorough completion of organizational and AmeriCorps paperwork
  • Responsible for administering youth program admissions process
  • Implement systems for effective, professional communication with MCC peers,, project partners and community members
  • Manage effectively all activities related to volunteer community service days and the necessary forms
  • Provide written documentation of field support and program activities
  • Participate in emergency on-call schedule
  • Participate in organizational committees as needed, and assist in the continual improvement of youth program systems related to administration

Recruitment and Outreach:

  • Coordinate with Recruitment and Admissions team in the state office for materials, resources, and recruitment strategies
  • Coordinate with Recruitment and Admissions team on youth leader admissions and all related onboarding tasks
  • Plan, coordinate, and implement local community service day events in coordination with program staff
  • Serve as representative of MCC to community groups, partnering agencies and parents/guardians
  • Work with Associate Director of Youth Programs and Vice President of Programs to ensure youth program materials represent the diverse perspectives of the youth we serve and the AmeriCorps members we train

Supervision Exercised:

  • Provide direct training and supervision to regional Youth Program Coordinators and Youth Program Leaders, including ongoing professional development, feedback and periodic written evaluation of performance
  • Implement fair and appropriate discipline and behavior management for Leaders/Members as needed to maintain high functioning crews and strong morale throughout the region

Minimum Requirements

Minimum Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience
  • Experience teaching middle school or high school youth in a public/private school, or outdoor program
  • Knowledge of youth program risk management practices
  • Knowledge of adolescent development and emerging adult developmental characteristics
  • Strong interpersonal and administrative skills, ability to effectively communicate through written word and orally
  • Ability to travel and be on overnight trips for up to a week at a time, often camping in a tent
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word and Excel, cloud-based collaborative systems, as well as G Suite for businesses
  • Minimum age of 21
  • A valid driver’s license, ability to pass a Motor Vehicle Records check and ability to be insurable per MCC parameters
  • Current Wilderness Advanced First-Aid/CPR certification required, advanced levels of First-Aid preferred
  • Ability to pass a Criminal History Check
