Terms of Service:

  • Start Date: 08/11/2025
  • End Date: 12/26/2025 (20 Weeks)
  • AmeriCorps Slot Classification: 675 Hour Slot

Purpose:

Stewards Individual Placements provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and protect our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting the health of natural areas. Stewards, in partnership with WESTERN ALLIANCE FOR RECLAMATION MANAGEMENT (WARM) are seeking a service member to support in creating educational and field-based experiences that tackle abandoned mine land (AML) challenges across the Western United States.

The service member will directly support environmental restoration and youth engagement efforts by leading field education, organizing service projects, and participating in reclamation activities that improve both land and community health. The goal of this project work is to improve environmental conditions and invest in building local capacity and youth leadership within regions impacted by historic mining activity.

Description of Duties:

  • Engage in field-based mine reclamation service projects in partnership with OSMRE and public land agencies.
  • Support and facilitate youth and student programming, including field courses, volunteer projects, and service-learning opportunities.
  • Collect environmental data and support monitoring and stewardship activities at AML sites.
  • Coordinate logistics for educational events and outreach, helping young people connect to careers in conservation.
  • Serve as a liaison between communities, students, and agencies, building connections to amplify the impact of local restoration work.

Qualifications:

  • United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien
  • Between the ages of 18-30, Veterans up to 35
  • Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of elementary or secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant, and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award
  • Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check
  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a degree program.
  • Strong interest in Education and Environmental Stewardship
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently or collaboratively
  • Verbal and Written Communication Skills
  • Community Organization and Conflict Management Skills preferred
  • Experience in Fundraising and Grant Writing preferred but not required
  • Experience in non-profit work preferred
  • Must have reliable transportation.

Physical Requirements:

Time Requirements:

  • Typically, this position is expected to serve a 35-to-40-hour workday, but exact service schedules may vary. A half hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service
  • Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.

Orientation and Training:

  • Member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.
  • The AmeriCorps member will have access to multiple professional development opportunities, including:
  • Participation in WARM’s summer mine reclamation field course, providing a hands-on learning experience.
  • Networking with industry professionals, government agencies, and academic institutions.
  • Training in grant writing, fundraising, and nonprofit management.
  • Mentorship from experienced professionals in environmental restoration and sustainability.
  • Potential enrollment in Western Colorado University’s Masters in Environmental Management (MEM) program, with a fellowship matching the AmeriCorps Education Award.

  • Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $2,817.14
  • Living Allowance of $592 per week.

Evaluation and Reporting:

As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.

Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
