Job Overview

Purpose of the Position: Our habitat restoration program is currently growing and we are seeking an enthusiastic, well-organized and knowledgeable individual to support the Habitat Restoration Program Team on a number of multi-disciplinary restoration projects to include salt marsh restoration, living shorelines, oyster reef restoration, aquatic connectivity, coastal resiliency, and beach habitat restoration. Position includes occasional weekend and evening work. The Part-Time Habitat Restoration Technician will work out of the Delaware Bayshore Program Office in Millville, NJ and will have frequent field site visits throughout the New Jersey side of Delaware Bay in Cumberland and Cape May counties as needed. The position is year-round with a full-time need during the months of May, June, and July and part-time the rest of year (not to exceed 900 hours annually).

Key Responsibilities and Duties

  • Support various projects and project teams within the Habitat Restoration Program with focus in Delaware Bay and the Delaware Bay Watershed.
  • Support Habitat Restoration Program Staff with project deliverables, grant milestones, and reports.
  • Assist Habitat Restoration Staff with promoting and communicating project objectives to associated communities and members of the public.
  • Perform monitoring protocol (e.g., horseshoe crab tagging, fish surveys, reef biodiversity) as provided for science-based restoration projects and ensure integrity of data and future replication.
  • Prepare, upload, and manage collected data.
  • Support Restoration Staff with coordinating project volunteer tasks and events as outlined in each restoration project and actively engage the public at various project events.

Minimum Requirements

Qualifications 

  • In college or have a BS in an environmental field such as marine/coastal ecology, wildlife biology, landscape architecture, and/or restoration ecology.
  • 1 to 2 years of experience in habitat restoration and/or marine/estuarine ecology programs with understanding of conservation biology, functional ecology, and habitat restoration implementation and monitoring.
  • Experience with science-based monitoring, sampling, surveying, and data collection.
  • Demonstrated ability in successful task performance and coordination once trained with minimal supervision.
  • Strong organizational skills, strong attention to detail, and excellent written/verbal communication skills.
  • Experience in coordinating volunteers, monitoring teams, and project related events.
  • Computer knowledge - familiarity with MS Office suite is required. Use of CADD and ArcView/Arclnfo GIS software a plus.
  • Ability to work on multiple tasks with varying deadlines.
  • Must be self-motivated and have willingness/ability to travel locally and/or state-wide.
  • The work requires some manual labor; must be able to lift 35lbs, bend, twist, and walk long distances.
