Executive Director

Salmon Valley Stewardship (SVS) is seeking a community-oriented and conservation-minded individual eager to coordinate and oversee all organization operations, increase organization fundraising, provide leadership to support achievement of SVS’s mission, vision, and organizational goals, and promote community partnerships and innovative conservation efforts in the Salmon River Region of Central Idaho. ABOUT US: Since our formation in 2004, Salmon Valley Stewardship, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, has grown as an organization with increased recognition of our many strengths, which are founded in our grassroots, local origins. Our mission is to promote a sustainable economy and productive working landscapes in the Salmon River region of Central Idaho. Our primary activities include projects in rural development, land and trails stewardship, education, local foods, working together, and organizational sustainability. Our vision of strengthening the connection between people and the natural world drives our organizational goal where stewardship of our natural resources is at the core of the social, economic, and ecological vitality of the region.

DETAILS OF THE POSITION

POSITION: Executive Director

LOCATION: The SVS office is located off main street in Salmon, ID. The ED is expected to maintain a presence at the SVS office and regularly engage with staff and key partners, however, a combination of in-office and telework flexibility is negotiable.

REPORTS TO: SVS Board Chair and Executive Committee Board of Directors

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Permanent Full-Time (35 to 40 hrs/week), Exempt

EMPLOYEE SALARY: $56,420 – $69,680 per year, dependent on experience

BENEFITS: Vacation and sick days, 10 paid holidays, monthly health care and cell phone stipend, training opportunities.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Executive Director is responsible for overseeing SVS’s operations, supporting staff in the implementation and delivery of strategic objectives and project work, and leading fundraising strategies. This leader should be passionate about rural livelihoods and quality of life, rural development through land stewardship and community driven projects, and bringing diverse voices together to benefit the land, communities, and future generations. The Director works with SVS’s Associate Director to oversee operations, budget, and program development. The Director will report to the Chair of the Board of Directors and will be evaluated by the Board Executive Committee. As the principal spokesperson of SVS, the Director must maintain positive relationships with members of the community and display high standards of integrity and professionalism.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Organizational Planning, Financial Management, and Fundraising

  • Leads the organization’s fundraising work to support long-term financial stability through diversified funding sources. Works closely with staff in developing funding proposals and budgets.
  • Leads planning and implementation of SVS’s strategic plan.  Works with SVS’s Associate Director to develop, implement, and monitor annual plans.
  • Identifies new opportunities and designs specific projects and initiatives to be reviewed and approved by the Board.
  • Works with Associate Director to develop and manage SVS’s annual budget, prepare quarterly financial statements, invoicing, contracts, and agreements.
  • Develops and implements accounting, contracting and financial management systems consistent with sound not-for-profit corporation business practices.

 

Team Leadership and Project Support

  • Supervises and manages permanent staff, including hiring new employees and contractors, and directing training of employees.
  • Works with staff to develop, track, and implement short and long-term work plans to accomplish promised deliverables, manage expenses and invoices.
  • Encourages staff development through mentoring and appropriate delegation of projects and decision-making.
  • Provides supervision and leadership in a manner that promotes teamwork, open communication, and mutual respect.
  • Leads aspects of SVS’s programmatic work as needed, including convening and facilitating collaborative efforts, rural development that aligns with SVS’s mission, and the planning of key organizational events such as SVS’s Annual Harvest Celebration and Fundraiser.

Board, Community, and Partner Relations

  • Reports regularly to the Board of Directors, donors and collaborators to strengthen and promote the mission and strategies of the organization.
  • Develops and maintains key relationships and communicates effectively with individuals and organizations that influence economic and ecological sustainability in the community. Plays a lead role in establishing working partnerships with organizations within the community and beyond.
  • Represents SVS at a wide array of public and private functions including at  workgroups or conferences, and media engagements.
  • Maintains active connection and engagement through strategies including individual communications, formal quarterly updates, annual staff and board retreats, and presentations at local, regional, and potentially national events.

Minimum Requirements

EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

The following qualifications are those we believe are necessary to successfully perform the Job Duties and Responsibilities and are the criteria used to evaluate applications.

  • Expertise in public lands or natural resources management or policy, rural economic development, collaborative conservation, and/or a related field, which would typically be obtained through 3 or more years of professional experience -OR- a Masters degree in a related field with 2+ years of experience.
  • Non-profit management experience, or experience leading or coordinating teams of people on joint initiatives, programs or projects.
  • Experience developing and implementing organizational or programmatic strategic plans, monitoring outcomes, and reporting.
  • Program-level, or organization-level budget management experience.
  • Experience cultivating and maintaining relationships with diverse partners, including citizens and landowners, nonprofit organizations, elected officials, Tribal agencies, legislative staff, and funders.
  • Experience advancing diversity, equity and inclusion at an organizational level and in the design of land stewardship and collaborative processes.
  • Confidence and experience with community outreach, communicating with the public both in writing, verbally, and experience producing public-facing publications/ documents, and managing social media outreach.
  • Demonstrated success in fundraising and/or grant-writing.

 

The following qualifications are also preferred:

  • Supervisory experience.
  • Ability to train, organize, delegate, and motivate volunteers and partners.
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment.
  • Experience building or participating in networks or coalitions.
  • Self-motivation and initiative. Organization and efficiency.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, some nights/weekends may be required.
  • Experience using QuickBooks and Bloomerang or donor management programs.  Technology proficiency and willingness to learn new software programs.

The successful candidate must also possess a valid Driver’s License and an acceptable driving record according to SVS’s auto liability policy requirements.
