Position/Title: Adventure/Outdoor Education Teacher

Appointment: School Year 2022/2023

Reports To: Director of Grades 3-5 at Butler

Position Summary

This position entails the design and implementation of child-centered, age-appropriate curricula in Adventure Learning Early Learners to Grade 12. The Adventure/Outdoor Education teacher works closely and collaboratively with not only the PE department, but also other specialists and homeroom teachers. The position is responsible for designing and implementing the PE curriculum at Butler for grades 3-5 and all adventure education programming school wide. Collaboration within the department and other grade levels is required. Team teaching specialized units in biking, climbing and gymnastics is desired. Experience coaching, teaching, and playing competitive sports are also strongly preferred. Candidates should include their sports of interest, particularly sports they are interested in coaching, in their cover letter.

 

Duties and responsibilities may include:

  • Preparation and implementation of daily lessons
  • Design, implementation, and timely evaluation of appropriate, authentic formative and summative assessment
  • Timely and proactive communication with students, parents, advisors about student progress
  • Collaboration with other members of the faculty, administration, and staff on experiential, interdisciplinary, and community-based opportunities that add to the school community
  • Active participation in all faculty and staff meetings
  • Support of divisional and school-wide initiatives through committee work, where appropriate
  • Instruction of students as a Dream, Dare, Do or Capstone facilitator with a Project Adventure focus
  • Supervision and/or participation in non-academic activities, including lunch, study halls, dances, class trips, etc.
  • Coordinating rentals and facilitation of the Project Adventure course and team building programs
  • Scheduling all maintenance and building projects related to the Project Adventure elements at both Lyman and Butler
  • Responsibility for maintaining and updating the Standard and Local Operating Procedures for the PA course
  • Maintaining list of staff qualified to operate the Project Adventure course and recruits and trains new faculty and staff as needed
  • Involvement in special programming that utilizes the team building activities and the Project Adventure course

Requirements

The successful candidate ideally holds a graduate degree and possesses three or more years teaching Physical Education with a strong background in Adventure Programming and/or Outdoor Recreation. Certification from Project Adventure and/or experience in outdoor education is preferred. S/he must possess a positive attitude, excellent written and verbal skills, strong organizational skills, and proven success within a work setting that requires collaboration, cooperation, and collegiality. The candidate must possess or acquire and maintain a State of Ohio issued teaching certificate or non tax certificate.
