About Conservation South Luangwa

Conservation South Luangwa (CSL) is a Zambian registered NGO and has been working in South Luangwa Valley since 2003, supporting the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) and Community Resource Boards (CRB’s) with an array of wildlife and community conservation programs – (www.cslzambia.org). CSL’s administration and operational offices are based in the small town of Mfuwe adjacent to the South Luangwa National Park in Zambia’s Eastern Province.  CSL has been in existence for 18 years and has built strong partnerships with DNPW and CRB’s in protected area management.

CSL practices a multi-faceted approach to wildlife resource management and protection, working in collaboration with DNPW and their respective CRBs to implement wildlife protection programmes. CSL provides training of law enforcement officers, supports equipment, uniforms, vehicles, fuel and maintenance, radio networks, IT and databases, infrastructure development, and wildlife crime detection and tracking canine units across the ecosystem. CSL established a Human-Wildlife Conflict (HWC) team in 2007, with community-based field officers who use participatory, strategic, and applied approaches towards HWC mitigation techniques. In addition to wildlife conflict mitigation, CSL’s community outreach programs include alternative livelihood activities such as chilli farming, community conservation game drives and community engagement in conservation services such as anti-snaring sweeps. CSL employs 122 full time members of staff.
