The Colorado Mountain Club has been delivering conservation, education and recreational opportunities to the Colorado public since 1912. The CMC acts as a gateway to the mountains for novices and experts alike, offering an array of year-round activities, events and schools centered on outdoor recreation. The Club connects thousands of adventure-loving mountaineers and teaches the skills to safely and respectfully maximize living in an outdoor playground.
With a friendly community, knowledgeable instructors and trip leaders, and a century-long legacy of adventure and education, the CMC is the perfect way to explore Colorado.
The mission statement of the Colorado Mountain Club was written in 1912 and has remained unchanged for over 100 years.
To unite the energy, interest, and knowledge of the students, explorers and lovers of the mountains of Colorado;
Collect and disseminate information regarding the Rocky Mountains on behalf of science, literature, art, and recreation;
Stimulate public interest in our mountain area;
Encourage the preservation of forests, flowers, fauna, and natural scenery; and
Render readily accessible the alpine attractions of this region.
Since it's founding, the Colorado Mountain Club has worked to create, define and protect the Colorado experience. In 1912, charter members Enos Mills and James Grafton Rogers worked tirelessly to designate the Estes Park Valley and beyond as Rocky Mountain National Park. Their success in 1915 marked the beginning of CMC's conservation legacy and changed millions of lives.
Today, CMC Conservation continues this tradition by promoting sustainable recreation, protecting wild lands, creating and maintaining access to Colorado’s best places for recreation, and engaging in stewardship in the places that hold so much meaning for members.
