Come to Southeast Alaska for an great summer working in the Tongass National Forest and enjoying everything Skagway or Haines has to offers: a fun work environment and vibrant town with amazing hiking, entertainment, and authentic Alaskan experiences awaiting.
Alaska Mountain Guides & Chilkat Guides offer a wide scope of outdoor adventures. Our staff are encouraged to broaden their outdoor experience through work and will have access to participate in any of our available day trips when not working.
Most positions available are associated with out day programs. We offer extensive guide training programs for candidates with limited experience. Candidates with an outdoor background or previous guiding experience may be eligible for fast track to multi-day / expedition programs.
All candidates should:
Company housing available in Haines & Skagway:
Skagway housing consists of three houses, most rooms are shared occupancy.
Haines housing is at our employee campground, limited space for employees with trailers/campervans (no utility hook ups), and wooded campsites. A group cooking area, staff lounge (with WiFi), and plumbed bathroom/showers are included at the campsite.
Both Haines & Skagway are small communities located at the northern end of the Inside Passage in Southeast Alaska. We're located just north of Juneau, AK -- the state capitol, and both towns are connected to the highway system which runs through Canada and connects to the "Lower 48".
The easiest way to get here is to travel to Juneau via Alaska Airlines, which has daily scheduled flights from Seattle; the flight time is about 1.5 hours.
From Juneau there are many daily flights with Seaplanes that connect to Haines & Skagway -- flights are between 30-60 mins on a smaller commuter aircraft.
The Alaska Marine Highway System (state ferry) also runs from Juneau to Haines & Skagway in about 5 hours or from Bellingham, WA in 4-5 days. The ferry is capable of taking cars/trucks from Washington State to Alaska for those who don't wish to make the 2,000 mile drive through Canada to our corner of Alaska.
Alaska State Ferry Service: The Alaska Marine Highway operates regular ferry service from Juneau, Bellingham, Skagway, Haines and other ports. (800) 642-0026
Alaska Airlines: Serves Juneau, 90 miles south of Skagway. From Juneau, it is a 40-minute scenic flight to Skagway. (800) 225-2752
Alaska Seaplanes: Commuter flights daily between Juneau, Skagway and Haines. (907) 789-5591
By Road: Both towns are accessible by the Alaska-Canadian Highway (ALCAN) which runs through Canada and connects Haines & Skagway to other parts of Alaska and the Lower 48. This is a very scenic drive but give yourself extra time as weather and road conditions change constantly. Passports are required if you plan to drive as both Haines and Skagway cannot be accessed without first passing through Canada. We recommend employees have a very reliable car and consider acquiring AAA roadside service protection if planning to drive.
We're surrounded by breathtaking mountains, glaciers, deep fjords and stunning glacially fed rivers. Whether you come for the amazing wildlife (bears, eagles, moose and more), or the adventure -- we're sure you'll finish your summer here with unbelievable Alaskan adventures and lifelong friendships.
