The Schooner AJ Meerwald is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Chief Mate. The AJ Meerwald is owned and operated by the Bayshore Center at Bivalve. The AJ Meerwald’s second restoration will be completed in June 2022.
The Chief Mate is the ship’s executive officer and assists the captain in management of the ship’s operations. This position is an opportunity for professional mariners in traditional sail to develop in a leadership position. We seek applicants who are passionate about traditional sail, the continuance of tall ship seamanship and sail training. The Chief Mate works with the captain to manage programs and the safe operation of the vessel. The Chief Mate oversees training of the ship’s crew and volunteers. As executive officer, the Chief Mate attends to operational details of the vessel to ensure the seaworthiness of the ship and crew. The Chief Mate manages the vessels rigging, departments, daily schedule, safety systems, personnel, and maintenance. Applicants must have traditional sail experience. Applicants must have experience as a deck watch officer, rigging, and management of crew and vessel operations. Applicants should have previous experience on traditional sailing vessels and familiarity with engineering systems. All crew will be required to follow Covid-19 health and safety guidelines as set by Bayshore Center at Bivalve (BCB). Vaccination for Covid-19 is required.

The Bosun is responsible for overseeing and conducting maintenance of sails, rigging, and hull.
The Bosun also participates in onboard and shore-based programming. Marlinspike seamanship and other bosunry skills aboard a traditionally rigged sailing vessel are required.
Education experience is a plus.

Responsibilities of a Deckhand/Educator include participating in onboard and shore-based programming and participating in vessel maintenance and operations. A strong environmental
ethic, plenty of stamina, flexibility, and a positive attitude are required. Environmental education
experience and experience working aboard a traditionally rigged sailing vessel are strongly
recommended.
