Job Overview

Seasonal Work at a Remote Family Owned/Operated Lodge with a View of Denali
Grower/Groundskeeper wanted for rustically elegant Alaskan lodges.  Interested in helping to promote sustainable, organic growing practices?  Come inspire guests of our remote lodges to buy locally, and explore growing opportunities of their own by feeding them fantastic organic food, grown by you, in a challenging environment, and educating them about the experience.  Great effort is expended to obtain organic, locally grown and responsibly harvested food, as well as fresh herbs, greens and tomatoes from the on-site greenhouse to contribute to our wholesome, delicious and attractively plated guest meals.

The Grower and Groundskeeper at Camp Denali and North Face Lodge is responsible for producing organic vegetables and flowers (in a 20ft x 40ft greenhouse and outdoor raised beds) that are incorporated into the meals at Camp Denali and North Face Lodge.  Maintaining production of vegetables and flowers, maintaining a composting system, caring for a lawn, maintaining grounds and decorative flower boxes and hanging baskets at both lodges, providing direction and supervision of part-time assistant(s), and interacting with occasional guests to explain the greenhouse operation are the essential responsibilities of the Grower and Groundskeeper.

The subarctic environment is not an easy place to grow food, so experience and interest in meeting this challenge is a necessity!  The payoff of these spectacular surroundings makes it well worthwhile.

Working and living as a member of a small close-knit community is an essential part of the summer experience, and involves duties and responsibilities outside the Greenhouse. No staff member is excused from doing dishes and mopping floors, showing guests to their cabins 1-2 times per week and introducing themselves to the dining room on occasion.

Our lodges are located in the remote interior of Denali National Park at the end of a ninety-mile gravel road. Access is limited. Recreation opportunities abound for people who love wilderness hiking and can self-entertain. Magnificent mountain scenery and expansive tundra landscapes surround us.

The nearest convenience store, restaurant, pub, entertainment facilities are a 6-hour bus ride out of the park, with limited selection there. Larger stores, movie theaters, etc., are unlikely to be visited throughout the entirety of the summer, as they are a 7-8 hour drive from our lodge.

There is no cell phone service at our lodges and limited, slow wi-fi only at central locations. Circumstances allow for deep and meaningful interpersonal relationships with other staff and guests, opportunities to save money, and to disconnect from the busy outside world.

We do require a two summer commitment to work with our lodges, with the potential for many summers of fulfilling work seasonally, which pairs well with travel and seasonal work in other locations.  The 2019 commitment will be from mid May through mid September.
