The Generalist Counselor is a fluid role that includes working with various age groups and activity areas. Generalists provide support and coverage to cabins to supplement the care of their cabin counselors. In this capacity, they help campers adjust to camp life, develop community with their cabin mates, navigate the daily schedule, and develop the skills to be successful anywhere. Generalist Counselors are responsible for preparing and facilitating activities, particularly Field Sports, and keeping activity equipment and areas safe and well-maintained. Ideal candidates will have previous experience working with children in group settings, interest in wearing many different hats at camp, and be self directed and eager to jump in where needed.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Hold responsibility for physical, mental and emotional wellbeing of participants; this includes:
Develop healthy and appropriate relationships with participants
Manage risk and maintaining the safety of participants
Provide direct supervision of participants as assigned
Deliver an activity program that promotes developmentally appropriate learning and fun in discipline-specific skills and abilities (activity curriculum created by Chewonki staff)
Field Sports activity in particular
Lifeguarding
Be an active member of the Chewonki community; e.g. participate in camp set up and take down, facilitate meals with campers in the dining hall
Assist Activity Coordinator planning and facilitating special events (e.g. – evening events, weekly events, once a session events, off-campus day trips)

Instill joy and enthusiasm into the daily life of camp
Experience working in specialized activity area; relevant certification, as required
Preferred Certifications depending on activity area could include: American Canoe Association, American Red Cross Lifeguarding, U.S. Archery Instructor, Association for Challenge Course Technology, etc.
Experience working in educational spaces, preferred
Current Wilderness First Aid Certification (Chewonki will offer course prior to camp season)
Current Lifeguard Certification, preferred (offered by Chewonki)
Must Pass Background Criminal Check
