SCA Massachusetts AmeriCorps
Essential Functions and Qualifications
- The SCA Massachusetts Corps is a partnership between SCA, AmeriCorps, The Massachusetts Service Alliance, and the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation. SCA Massachusetts AmeriCorps members serve the lands and people of Massachusetts for a total of ten months. Members will spend four months teaching environmental education in local public elementary schools and six months completing high priority conservation service projects on public lands. SCA Massachusetts AmeriCorps members will begin their service on Nov. 18, 2019. Community based living is a large component of this program. The living conditions are simple, rustic, and community focused. The corps is made up of 18 – 25 year olds with diverse backgrounds from around the country.
Education Service Season
SCA Massachusetts AmeriCorps members teach environmental education to more than 1000 elementary school students in the Hilltowns of Western Massachusetts. During the winter education service season, eleven teams of two SCA members serve in local schools three days per week, providing valuable environmental education services, service learning opportunities, after school clubs, and tutoring opportunities. Some members serve in a one day per week placement with local conservation organizations.
After three weeks of education training, SCA members break into teaching pairs and begin 12 weeks environmental education service. Members spend three days each week teaching environmental based lessons in 12 different schools throughout six different counties of Massachusetts. Teaching pairs often run afterschool programs, or aid with pre-existing programs. Members will complete a service learning project with their schools, engaging classes in a community based service project. SCA members are role models for young students, and consistently bring new energy into the classroom on a weekly basis.
Conservation Service Season
After three weeks of conservation skills and leadership training, SCA Massachusetts AmeriCorps members restore and preserve public lands throughout the Commonwealth from May through September Crews build new trails and maintain/repair existing trail networks. In addition, members engage in the restoration and preservation of historical structures, construction of accessible trails and the removal of invasive plant species.
Leadership development is an important component of conservation season. Each member serves as a crew leader for at least one 10 day field project. A typical field project or “hitch” consists of collaborating as part of a five or six-person crew for 10 days at a time, returning to Kenneth Dubuque State Forest for a three or four day break between hitches.
- Attend and participate in all trainings
- Plan and presenting environmental education based lessons
- Engaging volunteers in service activities
- Take on role of Crew Leader for at least one hitch, serving as a professional liaison with park managers, handling the logistics of a project, delegating responsibilities, developing emergency response plans, and completing all necessary paperwork
- Be an active and participatory team player
- Be an active and participatory member of the SCA Massachusetts community
- Comply with all SCA, DCR, and AmeriCorps policies and refrain from any prohibited activities
Members will receive a weekly stipend of $90.00
Upon completion of service, members will receive an education award of up to $6,095
Room and Board will be provided
Transportation to and from service activities will be provided
Health Insurance is provided to members
Corps members serve approximately 40 hours a week for a period of 10 months. Members must achieve a minimum of 1700 hours of service within that 10-month period (roughly 46 weeks of service). Service hours are typically performed Monday through Friday; however, some weekend service will be necessary. The general schedule each day is 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
