Job Overview
The Equestrian Director is responsible for planning and delivery of a comprehensive horseback riding program that is safe, fun and appropriate to the campers’ ages and abilities; a base plan is provided that meets current GSUSA safety standards and camp expectations/previous programming. This person should have supervisory experience in organized camps or youth riding programs and significant experience in Western riding. Duties include: managing a herd of 10+ horses (daily care, feeding, etc), keeping detailed records of equipment, horses, and staff, creating weekly schedules that meet camp standards, and facilitating teaching experiences for campers and staff. Directly supervises Wranglers/Riding Staff, the barn, and the leased herd of horses. Works with Camp Ranger to schedule farrier and vet services and for ordering feed. Works with the rest of the Admin team for reviews, staff meetings, conflict resolution, and other camp duties as needed (may include covering breaks for counselors, running into town to pick up supplies, organizing and running rainy day programming, calling parents about behavior problems, etc).
All positions include room and board and staff must live onsite for the duration of their employment. We have two resident camps that run consecutively (one in June, one in July) and a day camp property in Albuquerque that will run June – July. We are a gender specific camp accepting girls and non binary children in grades Kinder – 12th grade (primary age groups 3rd – 6th). Staff training is the end of May through the beginning of June on site at our Angel Fire, NM property.
Work dates are end of May through the beginning of August. Work locations are Rancho del Chaparral Summer Camp (45 minutes outside Cuba, NM) and Camp Elliott Barker Summer Camp (Angel Fire, NM).
Minimum Requirements
- 2+ years supervisory experience, 10+ years horseback riding and stable or herd management experience
- Must be at least 21 years old by first day of work
