Job Overview

Sunny Cove Kayaking is looking for professional sea kayak guides to join our team during the 2020 summer tourism season. Ideal candidates are individuals with a background guiding and/or kayaking who want their office to be the ocean.

About Sunny Cove:

Sunny Cove is a small operation of approximately 13 guides located in Seward, Alaska that runs sea kayaking and hiking trips out of Resurrection Bay, Fox Island, and Kenai Fjords National Park. Seward is located in a temperate rain forest climate at the base of the Kenai Mountain Range that descends into a large fjord called Resurrection Bay. Glaciers calving off into the water, humpback whales breaching out of the sea, and bald eagles soaring overhead are just a small snapshot of what one can see when working for Sunny Cove.

Specific Requirements:

The following list covers the minimum requirements to become one of our guides with Sunny Cove Kayaking.

  • Current Wilderness First Responder (WFR) and CPR certification (may be obtained before training if invited)
  • Available for the entirety of our season (May 1st – early/mid-September)
  • Prior guiding experience, preferably in remote locations
  • Kayaking experience with ACA/BCU skills assessments are preferred, but not required.

Training:

All Sunny Cove guides go through a three-week training program in early May that prepares them to lead clients safely on our Alaskan waters. Training topics will include paddling technique and rescue skills, leadership skills, trip logistics, reading weather and water conditions, local knowledge about plants/wildlife/history, company policies, and risk mitigation. We have certified ACA (American Canoe Association) Instructors on staff who facilitate our training program. Completion of training is required to become a member of the Sunny Cove Kayaking guide team. Once completed, first-year staff are promoted to an Assistant Guide where you will assist and shadow senior guides to learn the logistics and terrain of all our trips. Once you and SC management feel confident in your ability to facilitate a trip, you will move into a guide position.

Schedule:

Sunny Cove guides work from early May through early September with the primary busy season occurring from mid-June through mid-August. The day to day schedule is very dynamic for guides and changes week to week as we offer a number of different trips, but guides can expect to be fairly busy with few days off during our prime season and have a little more free time to explore during the shoulder season. Extended periods of time off are generally not available.

Trip Opportunities:

Once in a guide position, staff generally start off working our shorter trips as they get comfortable in our environment. New guides are able to work up to more challenging and longer trips during their first summer and will have the opportunity to lead each of our day trips. Lead Guides status is obtainable upon returning to Sunny Cove for multiple seasons. Lead Guides facilitate our multi-day kayak camping expeditions so while it is not possible to lead one of these trips as a first-year guide, there may be opportunities to join one of these trips as an assistant guide or shadow.

Housing:

Sunny Cove offers free, communal, bunkhouse style accommodations to our staff. Guides will have a bed in a shared yurt and all staff shares a centralized cabin that has our kitchen, bathroom, and common area for hanging out. Pets and smoking are not allowed on Sunny Cove property. All staff living on property share in chore rotations and pay a $100 housing deposit that is returned at the end of employment assuming that staff members contributed to a positive living environment.

Gear:

Sunny Cove does provide all necessary guide gear, but interns will be responsible for providing their own personal paddling gear which includes proper guiding attire, PFD (personal floatation device), spray skirt, VHF radio, and boots (a full list will be provided).

Application Process:

This is just a short list of information, but if you would like for us to learn more about you and have the opportunity to learn more about us and this position, please visit www.sunnycove.com and submit your application.
