Southeast Conservation Corps
Southeast Conservation Corps (SECC), a program of Conservation Legacy, is a non-profit, AmeriCorps-affiliated organization based in Chattanooga, Tennessee. SECC engages future leaders who protect, restore, and enhance our nation’s lands through community-based service. Our programs encourage environmental stewardship, foster community, and emphasize experiential learning. SECC serves a diverse population that is representative of the Southeast; including youth, graduates, veterans, and a cross-section of ethnicities and income levels. Youth Conservation Crew (YCC) programs take place throughout the state of Tennessee and neighboring states within the Southeast region. YCC programs are paid summer opportunities for local youth, ages 16-18, to gain experience in conservation, learn on-the-job training, and have fun.
Position Description:
SECC’s YCC in-town crew engages motivated young adults, ages 16 – 18, in a program that combines training and education with impactful conservation and service projects throughout the local area. Projects include, but are not limited to, trail design, maintenance and construction, watershed restoration, habitat enhancement, fencing, tree planting, invasive plant removal, and much more. This program focuses on engaging local youth in meaningful service and learning opportunities in their communities.
The in-town crew consists of 6 crew members and 1-2 experienced and trained leaders. Crews are in the field working Monday – Friday, completing predetermined projects created in collaboration with SECC project partners. Crew members will begin and end each day at the SECC office and spend some time each Thursday or Friday afternoon at the SECC office cleaning crew gear to prep it for the following week. The in-town crew is a non-residential program. Crew members have evenings, Saturdays and Sundays off, and return to the SECC office every weekday morning at 7:30am sharp and end workdays at 4:00pm. Members must be able to be without cell phones during work hours.
