Environmental Stewardship Associate 2020-2021 (2 positions available)

Organization: The Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association (NSEA) is a nonprofit organization educating, inspiring, and engaging the community to take action to keep wild salmon here for future generations since 1991. As one of 14 Regional Fisheries Enhancement Groups under the direction of WA Department of Fish and Wildlife, NSEA brings people together to work toward common goals for salmon recovery, stream restoration, and environmental protection.

Environmental Education Associate Position: NSEA’s two Environmental Stewardship Associate positions will work together to plan, organize, and implement community opportunities for salmon habitat restoration projects, helping to recruit, train, report, and increase our volunteer capacity. Additionally, these positions are responsible for community outreach and engagement in NSEA salmon recovery efforts, including advertising and hosting various events. The position is approximately 60% field-based and 40% office-based. Work weeks fluctuate and will include weekend and evening events.

The two Environmental Stewardship Associates will perform the following tasks: 

  1. Identify, schedule, plan, publicize and oversee volunteer-based projects including streamside habitat restoration work parties. 
  2. Update and manage a current list of volunteer opportunities and internships. 
  3. Assist with the recruiting, training, supervision, and rewarding of volunteers and interns. 
  4. Assist in collecting data for NSEA’s volunteer database and create reports on all volunteer projects. 
  5. Assist in the maintenance of NSEA’s on-site native plant nursery, working with community volunteers. 
  6. Table outreach booths, assist in the production of outreach materials, conduct public presentations, update social media feeds and assist with NSEA events. 
  7. Assist in the Nooksack River Stewards Program, including advertising and recruiting. 
  8. Provide support to other AmeriCorps team members, cross training in their respective programs. 


  1. Familiarity with the AmeriCorps Individual Placement program. 
  2. Passion for stream ecology, environmental science, environmental education, and public speaking. 
  3. Ability to lift up to 40 lbs. and be comfortable working outside in all weather conditions. 
  4. A clear background check and high school diploma are required (college degree preferred).

Time Availability:  AmeriCorps IP positions are 10.5 month positions starting September 1, 2020 through July 15, 2021 with an allocated stipend, health insurance, and an education award upon completion.
