Job Overview

Overview

The Utah Conservation Corps (UCC) is an AmeriCorps program dedicated to developing the conservation leaders of tomorrow. We’re a non-residential AmeriCorps program composed of AmeriCorps members, staff, and partners dedicated to service to our community, environment, and regions requiring disaster response efforts. We seek to provide a more welcoming environment for people of all backgrounds and experience levels to ensure a healthy, vibrant, innovative, and sustainable corps. Our goals are to encourage and support more diverse populations serving in an inclusive environment within the UCC and to recognize where we fall short and address our shortcomings.

UCC is a part of AmeriCorps Disaster Response Team (A-DRT), a coalition of service programs from across the country dedicated to mobilizing our members to provide critical services at disaster sites. Over the past 10 years, UCC has sent crews to respond to Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Sandy, flooding in Louisiana, Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma, flooding in Iowa, and Hurricane Florence.

DATES: Open until filled. This position is dependent on receipt of Mission Assignment(s).

LOCATION(S): Logan field office until deployed. Deployment is expected in the Southeast Region of the United States or the US Territory of Puerto Rico (Exact location TBD)

PAY RATE: $16.00 per hour + Per Diem during deployment ($55/day; $41.25 on first and last travel days). Overtime will be incurred. Candidates should expect to work each day of the 30-day deployment, including holidays and pre/post-deployment.

Initial job locations is Logan, Utah, but will then be deployed to assigned disaster site.

Responsibilities

The A-DRT Deployment Leader is an hourly staff position that is part of a leadership team. The Deployment Leader collaborates with the UCC A-DRT Program Coordinator and Deployment Coordinator in preparation and execution of deployments. While deployed, the Deployment Leader is responsible for the direct supervision of A-DRT AmeriCorps Crew Members, travel and logistics, and oversight of the assigned project at the disaster site. This is a temporary, hourly position with the Utah Conservation Corps. Deployments are 30 days.

Crews consist of approximately 4-6 Crew Members and will be assigned to projects by the Incident Command. This work may include mucking and gutting of affected homes, roof tarping, community volunteer management, and connecting residents to local social services.

Disaster response and recovery is rewarding work, but it is also emotionally and physically challenging. You will be working with communities that have undergone significant trauma and loss. Compassion, resilience, creativity, tenacity, and self-awareness are essential. Once deployed, there will be little to no time off and will include serving on holidays. Additionally, the selected candidate should be prepared to work and live in challenging conditions with little infrastructure.

During the deployment, members will be provided transportation, housing, a living allowance and per diem. The Deployment Leader will:

  • Provide direction and leadership to A-DRT crews daily on the worksite
  • Ensure crew safety and well-being on and off the work site
  • Coordinate with UCC, A-DRT, FEMA, and other agencies or organizations to plan, execute, and report on daily disaster response duties
  • Problem-solve and adapt to changing needs at the disaster site
  • Approve service hours completed by Crew Members
  • Lead or assist with pre-deployment and on-site training
  • Coordinate with the ADRT Program Coordinator and Deployment Coordinator (Leadership Team) in planning for travel, housing, food, training, gear, and any other deployment needs before traveling to the disaster response location
  • Collaborate with the leadership team to make purchases or requests related to crew and project needs
  • Assist the leadership team in tracking and reporting accurate data, including member training, project assignments, accomplishments, etc.
  • Coordinate with other leaders and personnel at the disaster site to ensure efficient project operations
  • Ensure UCC policies and procedures are followed during deployment

  • Facilitate a positive and productive deployment experience for A-DRT crews
  • Other duties, as assigned
