Job Overview

American Sign Language (ASL) Crew Leaders for Summer Youth Corps grow personally and professionally during their summer service term while gaining hands-on skills in conservation, youth development, and ASL interpretation. ASL Crew Leaders will motivate and supervise an ASL crew of Deaf, Hard-of-hearing, and hearing young people in a rigorous program focused on job skills training, environmental education, and conservation projects.

 

Crew Leaders train and supervise youth crew members on project work and lead educational and recreational activities during this summer residential program based in St. Croix State Park. Projects vary by location, but may include:

 

  • Introduced species management
  • Trail construction & maintenance
  • Stream bank stabilization, erosion control
  • Rain garden construction
  • Tree planting
  • Basic carpentry
  • Plant or animal surveying

 

We provide hands-on job skills training and certifications. This position does not require prior experience in natural resources.

Since the late 1970s, Summer Youth Corps crews and all education/recreation activities have been inclusive, with American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters. Deaf and hard-of-hearing young adults, ASL interpreters, and anyone studying ASL is encouraged to apply.

 

Women, BIPOC, LGBTQ people, and people with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply.

 

Details:

  • Entry level
  • Term: June 1 – August 15
  • Location: This is a residential program based in St. Croix State Park, MN with frequent travel throughout the region; food and lodging will be provided during the service term
  • Typical schedule: Full-time 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 3:30 PM, with an additional hour of facilitating education activities in the evening. Hours may vary by location and project. Overnight camping (during the week) is required.

Qualifications:

  • Completion of or ongoing study in a certified ASL interpreter associate or bachelor program; OR, possess fluent ASL
  • Possess excellent ASL and knowledge of Deaf culture
  • US Citizen, national, or permanent resident (per AmeriCorps eligibility guidelines)
  • Ability and desire to work well with others in a team setting, outdoors and in all weather conditions
  • Ability to foster strong work habits, environmental ethics, youth leadership, and team unity with youth from diverse backgrounds who may be experiencing a job and/or camping for the first time
  • Commitment to upholding Corps values of safety, service, respect, equity and community
  • High school degree, GED, or willingness to work towards obtaining a GED
  • Valid driver’s license and safe driving record (no major moving violations or DUI’s in the past five years) as crew leaders drive 12 passenger vans to transport crew.
