Job Overview


The Phoenix is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to foster a supportive, physically active community for individuals who are recovering from a substance use disorder and for those who choose to live sober. By participating in our physical, social and educational programs, participants build confidence, self-respect, and community. Activities offered include CrossFit, climbing, hiking, boxing, running, yoga, road & mountain biking, and strength training. Through traditional fundraising strategies and revenue-generating ventures, Phoenix is able to provide free programs for anyone with 48 hours of sobriety. The Phoenix currently operates in 45 communities across 24 states.



The primary responsibility of this position is to instruct programming at the Colorado Springs Chapter of The Phoenix (disciplines include indoor/outdoor rock climbing, mountain biking, hiking, running, and other group fitness classes). A strong connection to The Phoenix Mission and commitment to leading by example are critical to this position; preference will be given to those with personal experience in recovery from alcohol or a substance use disorder.

The Phoenix is a dynamic, creative, and fast-paced environment requiring employees to be flexible and able to adapt to an ever-changing environment. Weekend and evening hours and the ability to travel in the community may be required.



  • Instruct classes each week (primary needs are rock climbing events but other activities may include CrossFit, boxing, Olympic lifting, yoga, hiking, mountain biking, running, etc.)
  • Facilitate partnership and community programming as assigned
  • Assist with facility maintenance and upkeep to ensure the facility and programming space are trauma-informed (accessible, clean, safe, welcoming) and reflect The Phoenix core values and community standards
  • Spread the word about The Phoenix at targeted outreach events
  • Attend and participate in local and national staff meetings and programming and partnership team meetings
  • Carry out administrative functions, including updating the program schedule on our website and conducting outreach events and data entry
  • Support the achievement of quarterly and annual community programming and partnership goals
  • Review and respond promptly, accurately and cordially to all inquiries
  • Be an ambassador for The Phoenix at all times
  • Contribute to social media through Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram
  • Other duties as assigned



  • CWA, AMGA-CWI, or AMGA-SPI certification with experience facilitating climbing instruction preferred
  • Wilderness First Responder and CPR/AED preferred
  • Experience facilitating group outdoor programs preferred
  • Familiarity with multiple disciplines, including CrossFit, yoga, boxing, climbing, running, cycling, etc. is a plus
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to relate to people from all walks of life
  • Entrepreneurial spirit, humility, and integrity
  • Minimum high school education or GED
  • Certification(s) in one or more disciplines
  • Good organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to use standard office equipment and computer software, including word processing, spreadsheet applications, and email
  • Bilingual preferred but not required
  • An ability to work in a high-paced, ever-changing environment
  • Willingness to work flexible hours including early mornings, late evenings, or weekends as needed
